League Rep Duties

Represents the interests of your swim team and the League - before, during, and after a meet:

The League Rep supports the mission of the ESPSL year-round.  Reps from each team convene monthly to plan for the season and manage League operations. Reps from each team comprise the ESPSL Board and work collectively to coordinate the summer schedule, provide input to any rule changes, address any concerns from the previous year, coordinate dues, ribbon ordering, contact lists, and more.

Reps represent both the team and the League. The Rep is a great source of information to explain rules and procedures to team members/swimmers/families and to provide history and context. Additionally, the Rep provides a voice to the League on behalf of the respective team.  The goal of the collective work of the Reps is to best advance the overall interests, goals and mission of the East Severna Park Swim League.   Together, the Reps and the entire ESPSL Board works for the good of all the teams with the ultimate goal of ensuring all swimmers have a great experience!

Your Rep Represents: Your swim Rep is YOUR rep - seek him or her out if you have concerns about the meet. Parents should not be interrupting the coach/referee/judges with questions. This helps keep the meet running on time. If there is a concern about the other team, please raise it with your Rep, and they will talk with the other team Rep, coaches and meet officials as needed to address the matter.

Your Rep Connects: Your Rep meets with the other team's Rep, keeping open communication throughout the meet. Your Rep meets with your team coach(es) and ensures any changes are known and any issues addressed before the start of the meet and throughout the meet.

Your Rep Consults: Your Rep is tasked with helping to facilitate the execution of the meet. Your Rep reviews the program and consults your coach or the other team's Rep as needed.  Your Rep understands the basic rules of competition and consults them as needed to help manage meet operations and communications.

At swim meets:

Each Rep is available to consult/address/assist with the following, if and when need be:

  • a race needs to go to sweeps
  • a swimmer missed their race
  • a stroke and turn official or result not being consistent
  • a DQ call that is perceived as not being fair
  • recorders not writing clearly
  • need for water
  • behavior of team/unsportsmanlike behavior
  • weather calls - reschedules
  • and much more!

Note: During the meet, the job of each team Rep is to be just that - to work as a representative to and from the team and League to streamline communications, ensure integrity and fairness.  While most meets are calm, some meets require the Reps to consult and handle issues.  The Reps cannot serve in the role of referee, as that would be a conflict of interest. The Referee is in charge of the meet - they make the final decision. There are times where both Reps will be involved in the discussion with the Referee, but ultimately it is the Referee's decision.
